Leaving one state for another? From packing
belongings and finding a place to live to considering moving options and making
new friends, moving to a different state is a time-consuming process that takes
patience and planning. If you're not sure how to move to another state, we can
help. Our change-of-state checklist makes change easy.
Checklist
for making your interstate move:
Visit your
new state and city
First, if possible, visit the state and
neighborhood you want to relocate. Go and take a guide with you or head to the
city's visitor center for brochures, maps and recommendations. If staying at a
hotel, ask the concierge for suggestions. You should also be able to find a lot
of information about your new city and state through Internet search and review
sites.
Budget
agreement
Changing state won't be cheap. To calculate your
budget, start with how much you want and can spend on this endeavor. Then list
all necessary moving expenses. Remember to set aside a little extra money for
unexpected expenses. Also, if you are moving to a new job, be sure to check
whether your employer plans to cover some or all of your moving expenses.
Choose a
move-in date in advance
It's time to choose a move-in date! When moving to
another state, be sure to consider the availability of the Moving to Florida, your work hours,
family concerns, and weather when selecting a move date. Believe it or not,
when you move, the weather can also affect the cost of your move. Those moving
on weekends, holidays or during the summer are likely to have higher demand,
lower date availability, and therefore higher moving rates. On the other hand,
if you choose to move during the week, when it's not the peak of the moving season,
then you're likely to make a less expensive move.
Organize all
necessary supplies for the move
From shipping crates, plastics, foams, to bubble
rolls and packing tape, you'll need plenty of supplies for moving. Make sure
you order your moving supplies at least a month in advance so you can start
packing as soon as possible.
Develop a
strategic packaging plan
Before packing your stuff, establish a packing
schedule and plan. We recommend packing all non-essential items first.
Non-essential items are everything you won't need in the weeks leading up to
the move, including books, home decor items, and electronics. To make your
packing easier, donate items you won't need in your new home to a charity.
Think about
your car, how it will take
Unless you're planning on driving to your new home,
you'll need to hire a car transport service to do it for you. There are several
shipping options to consider, including shipping the car in the moving truck
itself, hiring a driver, or shipping by stork.

Confirm
changeover date and arrival time with shippers
Several days before the move, be sure to confirm
the move date and arrival time with your moving company. Chances are good that
the moving company will call to confirm the details with you at least a week
before the move. Regardless, we recommend tracking that week to ensure that
shippers arrive at the correct address on the correct date for the move. At the
very least, this should give you peace of mind and make the move less
stressful.
Take
essentials with you
A long-distance move means you don't receive your
belongings for at least a week after moving. We recommend packing at least a
week's worth of essentials. This should include clothes, shoes, hygiene
products, a first aid kit and snack.
